Palm Leaf Bowie SOLD
This Bowie was published in Dr. Tobias Capwell’s book “The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Knives, Daggers & Bayonets: An Authoritative History And Visual Directory Of Small Edged Weapons From Around The World”
The pattern-welded pattern (damascus) was inspired by the pamor of the Indonesian Keris blades where it is called “Blarka Ngirdi” or “PALM-LEAF”. This technique was pioneered in the US by Larry Sandlin and Don Fogg. Don Fogg, Steve Schwarzer and I demonstrated this pattern at one of Dr. Jim Batson’s symposiums at Tannehill many years ago and from there it spread.
The steels are 15N20 and 1095 for the blade and the same is used for the guard as well as the sheath fitting. The fittings have been heat colored purple.
The handle is naturally colored Walrus Tusk which is about 30,000 years old with a mokume spacer.
The sheath is maple which has been book-matched in such a way so as to match the “V” shaped flow of the blade pattern and completes the overall look and feel of the knife rather well.
Blade is 7” long by 1.25” wide with a keyhole pattern “Spanish Notch”
11.5” over all
I have a billet of this style in the works for a leaf shaped sword as well which may be of interest to you.
