Tools and Equipment

A blacksmith is a toolmaker and to that end I have found a need for a few pieces of tooling that I have not seen elsewhere.

I make cutlery hammers in two and three pound sizes. I had made a four-pounder for a few years, but that is a large hammer and there was little interest in so I will only make it on special request.

I have had requests for Japanese forging hammers in the past, but as they are essentially the same in design and use as those found in 18th century Sheffield England. If it makes you feel better I will call them whatever you wish, but essentially they are an off set tapered head which delivers a good controlled strike while maintaining the bevel of the blade. They are best used with the anvil about five inches higher than what most blacksmiths have them set at. It also helps if you do not force the hammer; we move only a small amount of metal when forging the blade bevel so there is no need to force the issue or the tool.

All hammers are forged to shape from medium carbon steel and selectively heat treated to yield a hard face and soft body. There have a wire brushed finish with a hot wax coating applied.
