Five Day smelting and forging class
Open to five (5) students.
$1500 per student (does not include travel or lodging or food)
Over the five days you will
-Build a Bloomery Furnace,
-Participate in the Iron Ore Smelt making a steel bloom
-Forge a bloom piece into a bar,
-Forge that bar into a simple knife blade which you will heat treat.
I do not know if we will get as far as polishing the blade and making a handle so you may need to do that on your own….but we will try to get to a completed simple knife.
This is a hands on dirty, smokey, hot fire, wind in your face, slag filled number of days and you will doubt your life choices…..but you may be weird like be an enjoy some of it as well.
No prior experience required, but it is not for the faint of heart.
Along the way I’ll talk about the history and chemistry of what you are doing and some alternatives…because you will do this A WAY, but not the ONLY WAY.
